Shared Placement and Post-Divorce Economic Well-Being

Previous reports have explored issues related to the economic implications of shared placement using Wisconsin data on divorces that entered the courts prior to 2007. In this report, the authors revisit this issue using more recent divorces, more complete income data, a longer follow-up period, and with new attention to differences between higher- and lower-income couples. This descriptive analysis: examines changes in mothers’ economic well-being and income composition before and after divorce; compares these for mothers with different placement arrangements; compares outcomes for mothers and fathers; and considers differences for mothers with different levels of baseline income.
