Child Support Receipt and the Quality and Stability of Housing

Prior research has documented that consistent receipt of child support payments generally increases the regularity of custodial mothers’ total family income. In this study, we looked at whether the regularity of child support payments is also associated with housing stability and quality. A large body of research confirms the importance of housing stability and quality for health and educational outcomes for families. However, despite child support being an increasingly important income stream, little research has been done on the relationship between the regularity of child support payments and housing stability or quality. The few studies that do focus on this relationship use Australian data, and are thus limited in their usefulness for US policymakers. In this report, we use Wisconsin data to examine the relationship between child support payment regularity, and housing stability and quality.
