Visiting Scholars Program, 2005-2006

About the Scholars

Two Visiting Scholars were in residence for a one-week period at the Institute for Research on Poverty, one during fall semester 2005 the other during spring semester 2006.

Rucker Johnson is Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley. His research emphasizes issues of poverty and inequality in the fields of labor, urban, and health economics. He presented a seminar titled “The Effects of Male Incarceration Dynamics on AIDS Infection Rates among African-American Women and Men.”

Celeste Watkins is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University. Professor Watkins’s primary areas of research are urban poverty, social policy, formal organizations (both nonprofit and governmental), HIV/AIDS, and race, class, and gender. Her IRP seminar was titled “Am I My Sister's Keeper? Professional Identity and Intra-Racial Politics in Post-Reform Welfare Offices.”
